My parents lived in Sterling, Colorado, where my dad was the City Attorney, and my mom was a childcare provider. My mom needed emergency surgery to remove an ectopic pregnancy. It saved her life and made mine possible the next year.&nbsp; We ultimately moved to be closer to care. I grew up in Highlands Ranch, in Douglas County, when there were wild horses. My parents were conservatives and taught me the importance of family, community, and serving others. I attended Douglas County public schools and earned a full academic scholarship to Johns Hopkins. I am a wordsmith by trade. At the AFL-CIO, representing working people in every industry, I worked to help pass historic infrastructure and American energy legislation. Most recently, at the US National Science Foundation, an independent federal agency, I worked for a Trump nominee on key workforce legislation that is re-shoring American manufacturing and expanding the map of American innovation. Then, last fall, my mom called to tell me that she did not have long to live. She’d been caring for my dad, who had been battling cancer. With both parents facing terminal illnesses, I returned home to Highlands Ranch to provide end-of-life care for both my parents.&nbsp; My dad’s union pension covered his treatment. Medicare provided both of my parents the care they needed and gave us precious time together in the comfort of our home. It was thanks to my own union, AFGE 3403, that I was able to drop everything to take care of my parents.&nbsp; I’m running for the care and dignity of families in my hometown.&nbsp; Before he died, my dad told me to run. That meant a lot, especially from a guy who voted Republican his entire life.&nbsp; Lauren Boebert voted against lowering prescription drug costs, including the ones that extended my dad’s life, and I can’t let that stand.&nbsp; Systems of support and care are missing, and economic hardship on middle-class families are mounting. We need new opportunities to meet people where they are. We need paths into the middle class and ladders up everywhere, and not always requiring a four-year degree. With expertise navigating Washington and intimate knowledge of our district's needs, I promise you will be heard in Congress. As we rise to local challenges, from legislation I helped shape, I will work to bring home investments for union jobs, apprenticeships, workforce training, public education, and start-ups. I will fight with my whole heart to protect and expand access to reproductive and maternal care and protect Social Security and Medicaid. Together, we can sustain our democracy and build a community that works for all of us.

<a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2024/06/01/republican-greg-lopez-skips-debate-eastern-plains/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">The Denver Post - John Aguilar</a>Colorado’s 4th Congressional District special election debate at the Grizzly Rose on Saturday featured two political novices, a guy who doesn’t want to win and an empty chair set aside for the presumed favorite in the race.Republican Greg Lopez was a no-show at the debate, sponsored by the Republican Women of Weld and the Lincoln Club of Colorado, a decision libertarian candidate Hannah Goodman called a travesty.“I disapprove of taking your ball and going home when things don’t seem to be going your way,” she said to a crowd of 200 or so packed into the venerable country-western bar in Adams County, just over the Denver line. “What an example for the youth today.”Republican Women of Weld Vice President Tammy Klein said Lopez, a former mayor of Parker and past unsuccessful candidate for governor, backed out a day before the event after he asked the organization to endorse him in the race and it declined.“We think it’s inappropriate (to give an endorsement),” Klein said, noting that four candidates across the political spectrum had been invited to debate in the race to fill out the <a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2024/04/07/4th-congressional-district-vacancy-ken-buck-special-election/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">rest of former U.S. Rep. The 4th District, encompassing the Eastern Plains along with populous Douglas County, is one of Colorado’s most reliably Republican strongholds.Trisha Calvarese is the Democrats’ nominee to run in the district’s special election. She’s also vying to get on the district’s November ballot to face one of six Republicans, including U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert.The 37-year-old labor advocate, who lives in Highlands Ranch and spent some of her youth in Sterling, said she has debated Lopez twice before.“I didn’t mean to debate him so hard to scare him,” she told The Denver Post after the debate.The reaction to Lopez’s absence was not positive among the Republican faithful who had come to see him debate.“You should get in front of everyone you can — these are his people,” said Lori Garcia Sander, a Republican who is running for a state house seat in the 4th District. “I was disappointed.”There were two other Republican debates Saturday afternoon at the Grizzly Rose. Former state lawmaker Janak Joshi sparred with state Rep. Gabe Evans in the 8th Congressional District, while five of six candidates in the 4th District — Boebert had declined an invitation weeks ago — tussled on stage.A request for comment from the Lopez campaign was not immediately returned Saturday. The district even spent a brief moment under Democratic representation when Betsy Markey held the seat from 2009 to 2011.Goodman took the opposite tack on the question of U.S. aid to Ukraine — or aid to any other country for that matter.&nbsp; Overall, she said she would support reducing the federal budget dramatically and lowering taxes to let people keep more of the money they earn.“I would shave down that budget as much as I could shave it down,” she said.The last candidate on stage Saturday in the special election race was Frank Atwood of the Approval Voting Party. He touted the benefits of approval voting, in which voters can choose multiple candidates rather than having to decide between the “lesser of two evils” from the major parties.But he plainly declared he has no desire to actually win.“My wife has told me she’ll divorce me if I win,” Atwood said. “I have no intention of winning.”

Lauren Boebert starts off leading Democrat Trisha Calvarese by a sizable margin, but that lead turns into a nearly equal deficit after voters hear about Boebert's positions on abortion and other issues, according to an internal poll conducted by a Colorado firm for the Calvarese campaign.Boebert is one of six Republicans running in next month's primary for the seat formerly held by Republican Ken Buck, who resigned from Congress in March, while Calvarese, a former speechwriter for the AFL-CIO and staffer at the National Science Foundation, is one of three Democrats seeking her party's nomination in the solid red 4th Congressional District.In a simultaneous special election, voters in the district will also elect someone to fill the remainder of Buck's term through the end of the year, choosing between Calvarese,&nbsp;Republican Greg Lopez, Libertarian Hannah Goodman and Approval Voting Party nominee Frank Attwood.A Keating Research poll of likely voters made available for review to Colorado Politics found the better-known Boebert beating Calvarese 49% to 37%, with 12% undecided, in a hypothetical general election contest. Both margins were outside the poll's 4.4% margin of error.The survey of 500 likely voters was conducted April 18-24 by live telephone interviewers. Buck had earlier announced he wouldn't seek reelection to a sixth term.Boebert's current position in the new district reflects her high unfavorable scores, said Keating, noting that his polling found she's deeply underwater, particularly with the district's unaffiliated voters."If you look at the demographics of the district, you've got an 18-point Republican advantage, and Buck won by 23-24 points," Keating said. "It’s a tough place for any Democrat to win, but I think having Boebert on the ticket, this poll shows Trisha has a real opportunity, because all these suburban-exurban voters are not too thrilled about her not standing up for veterans, her national abortion ban and the 'Beetlejuice' incident.""That’s what swings it," Keating added. "You go to basically 2-to-1 for Trisha with unaffiliateds, and up 52% to 34% with women, after hearing these things."Boebert's campaign declined to comment on the Democrat's internal poll.It's the second recent internal poll that shows Boebert facing strong headwinds in a hypothetical general election matchup. Fulcher</a>Democrat Trisha Calvarese was raised in Highlands Ranch, then left Colorado to work for the U.S. Civil Service and the AFL-CIO before returning to the state in the fall of 2023 to care for her aging parents.Calvarese, who describes herself as the “hometown” candidate, is in a unique position in this race — her name will appear on both the Democratic primary ballot and the ballot for the special vacancy election to fill out the remainder of former congressman Ken Buck’s term this year.For the primary, she won top-line billing at the district assembly. She was selected for the vacancy election by a committee of local Democrats.In her campaign materials Calvarese touts her work as a speechwriter for the AFL-CIO and the National Space Foundation, saying she was “at the forefront of shaping messaging” in support of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Inflation Reduction Act and the Chips and Science Act. All of those measures, she says, have helped support jobs for 4th District residents.Calvarese has never run for office. She served as campaign manager for a 2018 House race that her candidate lost.Calvarese spoke to CPR News about her positions on some of the issues that are most important to voters in the district.<h3>On democracy and good governance</h3>For starters, Calvarese said, a key congressional responsibility is passing a budget and funding the government. “When people are saying good government, I get it,” she said. “We need to pass crop insurance, we need to get a Farm Bill passed, and when those things are delayed they have real tangible impacts on people’s incomes and livelihoods.”One way to improve the performance and productivity of Congress, she said, would be to reverse the rule that allows a single member of Congress to force a vote on a resolution to remove the House Speaker. That rule led to last year’s ouster of Republican Speaker Kevin McCarthy and a long battle over who would replace him.Hearkening back to her union roots with the AFL-CIO, Calvarese said democracy needs to be bolstered not just in the political sphere but in the workplace. In the age of AI, workers need to be able to speak up about working conditions, their benefits and the results of their work. “In a lot of cases it’s technology — whether that is protection against AI replacing you, or what your output is.”<h3>On the economy and cost of living</h3>Calvarese said she would target “price gougers,” to bring inflation down and improve the economy. “We've seen record profits at a time that people’s pocketbooks have been really, really pinched, where for my generation, it's literally a luxury to buy groceries.”Another priority, she said, would be to bring jobs in innovative fields to rural Colorado. The 4th District, she noted, lacks a traditional four-year university “so we need pathways into excellent jobs that maybe don’t necessarily need a four-year degree.”On housing, Calvarese blames “speculators” for buying up starter homes and driving up prices. And she said the growing pressure on the “sandwich generation” – people caring both for children and elderly parents – speaks to the need to develop multi-generational housing.&nbsp;That problem is especially acute in rural areas, she said, where young people often feel like they have an impossible choice – staying in a small town to care for family members, or moving elsewhere to find economic opportunity. “No one should have to choose between those two. We should be able to have both,” she said.<h3>On immigration</h3>Calvarese says Colorado has the potential to become a world hub for renewable energy. At the same time, she touts her endorsement by the United Mine Workers and vows that the transition from fossil fuels won’t come at the expense of workers.“For folks who work in the fossil fuel industry we need to have bridges that get them either to upskill and reskill into different fields, and we need workplace protections in place, or even bridges to their pensions, whatever it takes, but it's not going to be on their backs.”She said economic incentives and partnerships are already available to spark research and development in renewables. “We need a representative though, who is going to fight tooth and nail to connect the money that's already there to our communities so that we can address some of these challenges that we're all going to face together one way or another.”
